    Hey Parents!
This is a page dedicated to you.  We know there are a lot of details that you need to know before sending your youth on a youth trip or when they attend an event.  This is the place for all of that.  Here you will find all the forms you will need, packing lists, youth account balances, chaperone policies and sign up.

Summer 2012 ELCA National Youth Gathering -
    July 17-24, 2012

July 17-24, 2012, ELCA youth will gather—again—in New Orleans, not to cheer on the Saints football team, but to stand with the saints of God in that place: the young and the old, the privileged and the uninvited, the lonely and the claimed, the powerful and the shamed, the weak and the strong, those who have built new homes and those still struggling to rebuild.

Why go back? Because New Orleans has more to teach us about fresh starts made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. New Orleans has more to teach us about generosity and about how to be good neighbors. New Orleans has more to teach us about the house that God is building.

Please join us in the summer of 2012 in New Orleans. There is more to be done, and more to learn.

Go to www.elca.org/gathering and become part of the movement, ELCA for NOLA!

The ELCA Youth Gathering recommends that youth participants be between 14 and 18 years of age and entering 9th grade in the fall of 2012 (completed 8th in the spring of 2012) or just graduated from high school in the spring of 2012.

Adult Leader information for this trip will be available in September.

    Chaperone Policy

At Word of Peace we make sure our Youth are well cared for and have ample adult supervision and interaction.  Due to the growing number of Youth wanting to participate in events sponsored by Word of Peace, we felt the need to also put in place a standard for the number of adults as well.

The Youth Team, Director of Youth Ministries and Pastors agree that a ratio of at least 6 to 1 is needed.  That is, for every six (6) youth that sign up one (1) adult needs to be present.  This does NOT include the Youth Director.  If the quota is not met then we will only allow as many kids as chaperones according to the ratio.  So parents, if you see that space is filling up and more and more kids are planning on coming, please consider spending some quality time with a large group of middle or high school youth.

In the case of mission trips or national youth gatherings Word of Peace heeds by the guidelines and policies outlined by the sponsoring organization.

Mission Trips:  Youthworks! Can I come with my teenager on this trip?  YouthWorks trips are geared for students entering 7th grade to graduating high school seniors. However, we do require 1 adult leader for every 5 junior high students and 1 adult leader for every 7 senior high students. Talk with your church’s Trip Leader to see if they need any additional adult leaders for the mission trip."

Wilderness Canoe Base: WCB website.  "Both Canoe and Hybrid trips have a maximum group size of 8 including 1 adult over the age of 21. Multiple groups per congregation are welcome."

National Youth Gathering: ELCA Website.  "The ELCA Youth Gathering is, and will always be, a ministry by, with and for teenagers. For that reason we cannot support a one-to-one ratio of adults to youth. We have noticed, however, and want to be supportive of, a growing connection between caring adults and young people in ministry. The ideal youth to adult ratio is 5 to 1, but the only ratio we insist on is one adult for every ten youth, and we encourage at least one adult for each gender represented in a group. Adult leaders must be at least 21 years of age at the time of the Gathering."

Summer Camp:  Summer camp does not require chaperones because of the abundance of staff provided by the camps themselves.  However, we do need adults to ride to and from the camp on the buses to insure safety.

Note: A standard background check is required to become a chaperone of Word of Peace events.
